(a) Overview.

Opening statements provide each party an opportunity to:

  1. outline the facts they intend to prove;
  2. explain the elements of the charges or defenses; and
  3. inform the jury of the sequence and nature of anticipated evidence and witnesses.

(b) Limitations.

  1. Parties may not argue or comment on the credibility of witnesses during opening statements.
  2. Statements must be confined to evidence the party reasonably expects to present.
  3. Improper or inflammatory remarks may be corrected or admonished by the court.
